Mint Variables
1/26/2025

This generative system was created in response to the Genuary 2025 prompt for January 26: "Symmetry" (credit: Melissa Wiederrecht). At first glance, an agitated cloud of geometric shapes dances in empty space, oscillating between chaos and order. While symmetry often appears as a straightforward set of rules enabling the efficient creation of aesthetic patterns and spatial organization, it can also be seen through a generative lens: as a domain of infinite repetition and magical transformations. yrtemmys approaches this idea through an exploration of the symmetry of the cube. By starting with one simple shape - or two, or three - transposed exclusively through the rotational and reflective rules of octahedral symmetry, the system reveals a duality between an expansive, seemingly random universe and an organized, deterministic, contained structure. Sometimes symmetry is there but we can't see it, either because the order is partially represented, or because it is hiding within the noise of movement or color. Sometimes we focus solely on a specific connection. Sometimes we believe in it, but aren't sure; other times, we don't. But when we truly want to see it, or when it desires to be seen, we learn to love its omnipresence. Mint Variables: - [0] Color palettes: random seed + rgb on the edges, black background on the left middle, analogous / monochrome on the right. - [1] Rythms: random seed + shorter loop < - - > longer loop - [2] Camera movement: random seed + less rotation < - - > more rotation - [3] Shapes: random seed + 1 shape < - 2 shapes - > 3 shapes - [4] Symmetries: less < - > more This work is animated and can be resized and exported as a seamless looping GIF. The aesthetics change with the canvas size: while the pixel dimensions stay relatively fixed, the scene space adjusts proportionally to the screen size. Features and Interaction: - [Pause & Menu Access] Click on the animated painting to open the menu. Click again on the painting to hide the menu and restart the animation. - [Size] Define the frame size, then confirm by clicking OK to apply the change. - [GIF Export] Save the current animation as a GIF. The animation will continue running while the GIF is being generated. - [Frame Navigation] Move between frames with the < X / Y > selector. - [PNG Export] Save a snapshot of the current frame as a PNG. - [Sync] Synchronize multiple screens using webRTC (highly experimental with challenging user experience; intended for the adventurous). yrtemmys was created and developed by Nico in 2025 using a custom-crafted codebase that incorporates various open-source libraries: - Generic libraries (wgpu, winit, wasm-bindgen, etc.) for working with Rust in the browser and GPU. - Matt DesLauriers's gifenc JS library for encoding GIFs. - Eli Grey's FileSaver JS library for downloading files.
